On August 26th we have an opportunity for change that should not be ignored... PDF Print E-mail

Anita CerecedaThe article on the front page of the News-Press is an affront to every citizen of Lee County. Not simply because the County Manager’s actions have been called into question but because the Board of County Commissioners led by Chairman Ray Judah, had this issue brought before them by Commissioner Bigelow in February.

Chairman Ray Judah stonewalled every attempt made to bring this question to light.

Why has Commissioner Judah been so quick to guard Mr. Stilwell from scrutiny?

What did Ray Judah know and when did he know it? The facts were there last February yet, Commissioner Judah did not allow the facts into the public spotlight.

Why has Commissioner Judah, the Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, been so slow to act?

To call for an investigation into the matter at this late date is water under the dam.

Would Commissioner Judah have called for the investigation had the News-Press NOT published the investigative news story?

The newspaper was not elected to lead this county but the people did elect Ray Judah and he has failed.

To protect the people the Board represents Stilwell should be immediately suspended without pay. If the investigation proves he lied to Commissioner Bigelow, and consequently the citizens of Lee County, Mr. Stilwell should be fired.

Ray Judah owes the people of Lee County an apology for failing in his duties as Chairman of the Board.

In the real world of business and finance not only would Mr. Stilwell be investigated but Chairman Judah would be relieved of his position as well.

At 12:01 p.m. at the Lee County Supervisor of Elections office, the champagne came out.

“Now I can just think about the job,” said Supervisor of Elections Sharon Harrington.

Actually, the beverage during a busy work day was non-alcoholic, but a weight was lifted off Harrington’s shoulders when the noon qualifying deadline came and went with no challenger for her job.

Editor, Daily News:

Our current system of electing Lee County commissioners fails to serve the citizens it is intended to represent.

Our at-large system is flawed and illegitimate. Limiting, intentionally or not, the ability of many people who might otherwise be able to present themselves for office is a direct consequence of the old Jim Crow laws and should not be allowed to continue.
